Dubai: TORRENTIAL DOWNPOUR

rain-in-dubai-2009

Rain in this part of the region is like a diamond—a rare find. Heavy downpour is another diamond thingy. January 2009 came the torrential downpour. Quite an unexpected show of crashing vehicles to see in the well paved streets of Dubai. I couldn’t imagine what the scenario would be like if I had witnessed it personally because I haven’t seen any canal in Dubai for water drainage. Maybe, I haven’t seen one in the area I was staying. But really, I did not see one for myself in the other places I have been to. One time, I told myself what if one day a flood will visit the place. And so it came.

Looking at some pictures over the internet made me feel so scared. Why? What if global warming will start shifting weather climates from one place to the other? This is a very possible thing to happen anywhere. What if Dubai will experience flood even at 2-3 feet high. The terrain is generally flat so that will be covering the entire city’s landscape. The city will dramatically be caught in turmoil.

I was just wondering how this desert experience heavy rains. Late last year, I saw either Discovery Channel or National Geographic Channel the footage of how a desert, part of Oman (if my memory recall is sharp, hehehe) turned green with pouring rain as the anchor’s background. Amazing!
